Active ingredients
100 mg povidone-iodine
Excipients
Sodium hydroxide for pH adjustment, Purified water, Macrogol.
Scope
The drug is used repeatedly and short-term for antiseptic treatment of wounds of damaged skin (e.g. bedsores, leg ulcers), superficial wounds, burns, infected and superinfected skin diseases.
The ointment is used in adults, adolescents and children from one year of age.
Dosage
The recommended dose is (unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor).
Apply the product evenly to the damaged area one or more times a day. If necessary, a bandage can be applied.
The brown color of the drug is a property of the drug and indicates its effectiveness. An increase in color change indicates a decrease in the effectiveness of the drug. If the color is completely lost, the product is no longer effective. If you notice that the ointment has significantly changed color, you should reapply the product.
The application should be continued as long as signs of inflammation persist. If your symptoms do not improve after regular use for 2 to 5 days, or if symptoms return after treatment, consult a doctor.
This medicine is for external use only.
Contraindications
Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to povidone-iodine or any other ingredient in this medicine, if you have hyperthyroidism or other existing (overt) thyroid disease, if you have a very rare chronic skin inflammation called Duhring’s dermatitis herpetiformis,
before, during, or after the use of radioactive iodine as part of radiation therapy or diagnostic testing
if you are using mercury-containing products at the same time in newborns, infants, and children under one year of age.
Side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine may cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Serious side effects
Severe allergic reaction; symptoms include difficulty breathing and/or swelling of the face.
Other possible side effects
Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people):
Hypersensitivity reactions
Inflammation of the skin after contact (contact dermatitis with symptoms such as redness, small blisters and itching)
Acute general allergic reactions, possibly with a drop in blood pressure and/or shortness of breath (anaphylactic reactions)
Overactive thyroid gland (iodine-induced hyperthyroidism), possibly with symptoms such as rapid heartbeat or inner restlessness in patients with thyroid disease
Acute swelling of the skin or mucous membranes (angioedema)
Electrolyte imbalance (also with disturbances in serum osmolarity)
Metabolic acidosis (blood overacidification)
Impaired kidney function (acute renal failure)
Deviation from normal blood osmolarity (the ratio between liquid and substances dissolved in it, such as electrolytes, nutrients, metabolic products, etc.).
Not known (frequency cannot be estimated from the available data):
Hypothyroidism, temporary skin discolouration, after significant iodine intake during prolonged use of the drug on large areas of skin, wounds or burns.
